Grafton Field Trip Stop 4 of 7
@Grafton Harbor / Winery / Gift Shop / Boat Rental / Riverboat / Oyster Bar
Joe & Jan Desherlia both grew up around entrepreneurship. Jan's family owned Bertmans and the bowling alley, while Joe’s family owned the rock quarry and fish market. Joe built the building that previously housed their childcare business - Jan’s Kids, where she utilized her early education degree. They ran that business for 18 years. She also helped start Sonshine Kids and the Wellness Center daycare.

Joe is an engineer and Grafton had been trying since the 60s to have a marina. In 2001, after planning and researching Joe started the process of getting the necessary permits and licenses - which took almost five years.
In August of 2005, they broke ground. In March of 2006, they docked their first boat. They knew they had a lot invested and didn’t want to miss the 2006 season. They built the marina at Portage Des Sioux and floated it down the river to its current location in Grafton. They have over 300 slips and a waiting list for many of the docks. They also built the floating gift shop and restaurant (where Oyster Bar is located).

We also spoke with Captain Bill who recently passed the rigorous testing to become a licensed US Coast Guard Captain. Joe is also a Captain of the US Coast Guard. With these credentials, they not only sell, but also transport boats. Joe once transported a boat from Florida to the Virgin Islands.

Joe and Jan are kind hardworking individuals. Grafton Harbor is one of only twenty-two five anchor harbors in the United States! What they have created within all of the facets of their business is truly remarkable.

Keep them in mind this summer if you are looking to rent a boat, take a cruise, or enjoy some shopping!

Thank you for speaking with us and for the treats!
